Milwaukie needs a long-term financial plan that protects the services residents rely on without placing a greater tax burden on families. The city is projected to face a significant budget shortfall in the coming years, with an even more difficult financial outlook beginning next decade. We need to act now by strengthening our local economy, thoughtfully expanding our tax base, and ensuring every taxpayer dollar is spent wisely. Responsible planning today will help keep Milwaukie affordable, financially resilient, and well positioned for the future.
Deliver More Housing
Housing affordability won't be solved by one project or policy. I believe Milwaukie should take an all of the above approach that brings together public, private, and nonprofit sectors to increase housing opportunities. The city can't solve this challenge alone, but it can help to remove barriers by improving the development process, strategically using city-owned land, supporting nonprofit housing providers, and partnering with responsible developers. By creating the right conditions for investment, we can encourage thoughtful housing growth that meets our community's needs while being responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars.
Support Local Businesses & Smart Growth
Thriving local businesses create jobs, strengthen neighborhoods, and generate the revenue that funds parks, streets, and public safety. I support targeted investments that encourage redevelopment in downtown, neighborhood business districts, and underused commercial areas while preserving the character that makes Milwaukie special. Growth should be intentional, community-focused, and benefit everyone who lives here.
Milwaukie has worked hard to advance Milwaukie Bay Park Phase 3, and our community has been waiting nearly a decade to see meaningful progress. I support a practical phased approach that delivers visible progress as funding becomes available rather than delaying the entire project until every piece comes together. Milwaukie residents deserve to see real progress on Milwaukie Bay Park while ensuring NCPRD is accountable for maintaining all of the parks our community relies on.
